Safari Zoo Run 2013

An 8,000 strong crowd took a run on the wild side when they took part in the Safari Zoo Run 2013, held on the first weekend of the Year of the Snake.

Participants got to run amidst the lush greenery of the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari as wild creatures watched. The race was flagged off Guest-of-Honour Mr Liang Eng Hwa (Member of Parliament, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC) along with Mr Lee Meng Tat, CEO, Wildlife Reserves Singapore and Ms Isabel Cheng, Chief Marketing Officer, Wildlife Reserves Singapore.

Participants also took part in snake-tivities after the run, such as visiting a snake-themed educational booth, viewing an auspicious snake showcase at Singapore Zoo’s Rainforest Walk, and engaging in hand painting activities.

Many participants also visited the Reptile Garden and where over 20 species of snakes were on display. Now in its fifth year, Safari Zoo Run was conceptualised in memory of orang utan Ah Meng, one of Singapore’s most adored animal personalities.

The objectives of Safari Zoo Run are to encourage family bonding and promote healthy lifestyle amongst Singaporeans. The run also aids in wildlife conservation, with S$100,000 from the run going towards the care of endangered animals in Night Safari and Singapore Zoo, as well as the adoption of orang utan Ah Meng Junior.

OF ZOOS believes that the poem is created out of a regular grammar of lines, rhyme and rhythm as much as it is created from holes cut out in books or newspaper clippings patched together. By the phrase “poetry and its sub-branches”, we mean (or try to mean) poems (from the sonnet to the haiku to the cento), flash fiction pretending to be prose poems, flash fiction that are prose poems (who can tell the difference anyway), illustrated poems, mixed media forms disguised as poems, a photograph of your dog etc. The only thing we do not allow are plagiarized poems.

Since we are pretty much embryonic at this stage, the journal’s final appearance will be dictated by you, our readers and contributors, and by the discerning eye of our editors.

OF ZOOS loves literature and art; invention and tradition; artificiality and verisimilitude; outrageousness and subtlety; tenderness and the sublime. We adore paradox, the courageous metaphor, experimental voices, and most of all, we love the fact that we love to write and read. We encourage Singaporean sensibilities not limited to Singapore, if that makes any sense. We especially encourage young, new, unpublished, ‘in the closet’ Singaporean writers. We welcome non-Singaporeans.
